Beginning Sewing

sewingInstructor: Caryne Mount

This class is designed to introduce beginners to the basics of machine sewing and serve as a refresher class for those who have not sewn in a while. You will learn to operate your sewing machine, use machine accessories; about threads, fabrics, patterns, sewing terms, construction methods, and about sewing tools and how to use them. We'll work on an easy pull-on pajama bottom, along with smaller projects designed to compliment the class lesson. Please bring your own serviced machine with its accessories. About the instructor:Caryne Caryne has been sewing all her life, and started teaching sewing and textile arts classes in 2002. Sewing and textiles are her favorite art medium, and teaching is a passion: "I really love to see light bulbs go off in my students heads, to see them empowered by a new skill or building on the skills they already have, and seeing them go from not knowing anything about a sewing machine to mastering it!"

Caryne MountShortly after graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in Art History and minor in Textile Design, she moved west to California to earnestly pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a clothing designer. Inspired by her great love of Japanese textiles, Caryne utilized one of a kind vintage kimono fabrics to construct her original, reversible coats. Her work has been included in the FiberArts Design Book Six; won Best of Art to Wear at the 2006 International Quilt Show in den Haag, and was awarded Thread's Magazine Best Garment Construction title in 2002 for her reversible coat for their Denim Challenge.

Caryne started exploring surface design and hand dyeing in 2000, when she was awarded the second of two individual artist grants in 2000. Caryne also became immersed in the world of ballet costuming as well, designing and building classical tutu for the ballet. When she isn't sewing or dyeing fabrics, she loves to garden, practice yoga, and explore Oregon's beauty via hiking and riding her bike with her spouse, and spoil their Mini Aussie, Ed!
