Biography

Chiharu Sai

Music Faculty and Music Department Coordinator

Selected by Japan’s major newspaper, Mainichi Shinbun, as “One of the 100 People in Tokyo to Represent the 21st Century,” Dr. Chiharu Sai performs widely as a solo pianist and chamber musician, both in Asia and the United States. Dr. Sai has joined RCC Music Department in the spring of 2020 after serving on the music faculty at Southern Oregon University.

Dr. Sai is actively involved in music education and pedagogy. In the past, she has taught at several schools in New York City including Manhattan School of Music. As an adjudicator and clinician, Dr. Sai was invited to piano competitions sponsored by New Jersey Music Teachers’ National Association and has given lecture-concerts and masterclasses for music organizations in the Tri-State Area including Long Island Piano Teachers’ Association.

Chamber music is Sai’s heart and passion. She enjoys collaborating with other musicians on various projects. Most recently, she performed with Rimsky Korsakov String Quartet from Russia to a great acclaim. She also enjoys performing with Pacific Crest Chamber Players from Pacific Crest Music Festival in Northern California where she serves on the piano and chamber music faculty every summer and works with gifted music students from all over the world. In Southern Oregon and Northern California, she is heard collaborating with members of North State Symphony, Rogue Valley Symphony, Shasta Symphony, and San Jose Symphony in concerts including fundraising chamber music events for non-profit organizations. In recent years, Sai has organized and presented fundraising concerts to support Mercy Hospice, W.A.T.E.R., and Mt. Shasta Children’s Choir. Sai believes in the power of music to bring people together to do greater good for the community and society at large.

Chiharu Sai holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, Masters of Music from Arizona State University, and Bachelors of Music from Willamette University. She has attended Kunitachi Conservatory of Music in Tokyo before coming to the United States as a high school exchange student. Her doctoral dissertation entitled “The Proportional Function of the Cadenza in the First Movements of Mozart’s Piano Concertos” was published by Lambert in Germany. Her debut CD of Chopin’s 4 Scherzi and 4 Ballades was released on King Records of Japan. Of this disc, the critic Yoshiko Ikuma noted Chiharu Sai’s “deep identification with their celebrated creator’s genius”.

Biography

I'm honestly just trying to do my best in a world that doesn't always support that behavior. I try to treat others as I would want to be treated. I teach with compassion and openness and vulnerability and I try to instill that in my students, too.
Teaching in the Communication Studies Discipline has given me a front row seat to witness some of the most life-changing moments of my students' lives. How lucky am I that I get to witness the growth of confidence right before our very eyes?
Some of my best life friends have been made in the classrooms of college campuses around the nation. And they are people from all walks of life with a passion for learning and understanding...not for being right...but for wanting to be righted. Wherever that learning took us, we wanted to understand with each other. And we knew that as long as we had each other...everything else was golden.

To Knox Brown. To Delores Price. To 10-15X. To Larry, Lee, Karen, & Amy. To Gator Pride. To Eric Campanano, Sabrina's skirt suit, Ma Bush's pearls, and 7 Stars. To every single Squatty Bear out there. To Tony Bernacchi.
To my dogs and our hiking trails. To writing. To performing. To being alone in a crowded room. To all things that go bump in my mind.
Thank you. And good night, Gracie.
