Creative Commons Licensing

Creators of open resources hold a copyright on them, as any author of a creative work does. OERs are published with Creative Commons licenses specifying the usage rights granted by the author. A CC 0 license essentially puts a work into the public domain. The remaining licenses carry one or more of the following attributes:

  • CC BY – you must credit the original author.

  • CC ND (NoDerivatives) means your work can’t be altered without permission.

  • CC SA (ShareAlike) means that if you incorporate the content into a work of your own, that work must be distributed under the same license.

  • CC NC (NonCommercial) means your work can’t be used for commercial gain.
