Instructor Qualifications and Experience - Rachel Winters

Rachel Winters, looking at treeRachel Winters is a self-confessed long-time plant addict. She says she got interested in bonsai less because of the aesthetics, but more because it enabled her "to have lots and lots of species of trees and shrubs without having a piece of property the size of Lithia Park.” After a number of years of collecting and propagating her favorite plants, her garden had become a nursery providing plants for use in her landscaping business. She no longer does large landscape installations or maintenance, so now her nursery focuses on her bonsai projects.

Rachel has taken RCC ceramics classes from Phil Fishwick for the past three years, making bonsai pots as well as pursuing many facets of the art of clay. You can see examples of Rachel’s pottery and personal bonsai collection at her website,

Rachel Winters, on a hikeRCC has been fortunate to have Rachel as an instructor in our Landscape Technology program for a number of years. Rachel also teaches plant identification, ecology of the Siskiyous, Oregon native plants and arboriculture. In past years she has given classes in plant propagation and ornamental pruning, as well as wildflower hikes for the Health/PE/Recreation department.

Rachel recently retired in the fall of 2014 after writing a monthly column in the Daily Courier for ten years as “The Constant Gardener.” She now is able to spend more time doing her favorite thing: hiking and exploring the beautiful mountains and meadows of Southern Oregon.
